OK rug guys, whats going on here...

Owner says its been on a wall for 19 years and hanging over a sofa for a few more.

Never cleaned.

So whats your best guess as to why all the color movement?

Looks like it got wet and rolled up to me. Should I attempt to strip out the orange from the white?

On my monitor it looks like something was spilled on it and attracted soil to the fibers i'd wash before breaking out the sledgehammer

Each white bird has those orange spots.

My best guess about the spots is humitity spots. Like the spots you get on your white dress shirts in the closet and on white cotton upholstery with down filling. Again, it's just a guess. If it is, most likely permanent. Takes about 5years or more to start showing up. You can correct with h202 but a slow process.

It could also be bug poop, possibly spider. If it is, it should wash out.

Look what I was doing color repair on a few weeks ago:

Very poorly dyed. This one appeared to have a lot of oils and dirt in the weave, and existing dye bleed, even though the customer said it had been in a trunk for years and had never been used on the floor.

Mikey, it almost looks like a browning situation. Did this happen after cleaning? if so, try recleaning the rug and drying it up side down with an air mover blowing across the top.

I'd say humidity...that humid ocean air in your area.

Damn Bryan, too darn funny.

I cleaned it today. used MB Dye Set which didn't do squat. the pre sprayed with MB Fine Fabric Shampoo and extracted with a uph tool.

No running, looks much better.


But yeah, fabric is loaded with flaws and crap.

I couldn't tell if the orange went away while it was damp.

I'll take more pics when dry.

OK got it cleaned.

Most of the green and orange that moved into the white is now gone.
Some is still in the fringe.


Way better.

Cleaning took about 45 minutes. $175.

I used that first, shampooed it with their Fine Fabric stuff and soft water rinsed.


No touch up needed.

Mikey... Next time do a pH test. Just a guess, but it looks very similar to cellulosic "burn" caused by an acidic chemical such as flame retardant. The scenario fits, too. Occurs spontaneously over a period of months or years and gradually gets worse.

After looking at those pictures more closely I think it was spotted browning...just bits of moisture in certain areas that caused it. Either way, it looks darn good now.
