After a job while the gunk is still wet, I squeeze the hose cuff to an oval and vacuum the gunk back out through the slots and/or the vac relief hole. When there is enough to grab I pull on the pieces until I get most of it out. If a small piece refuses to come out, it will likely shift during the next use and come out then. I have never taken the tool apart.

Should be a part of your post job maintenance. If the front two retaining screws were moved to the side by half an inch or so in the design of the handpiece, far less ferries would accumulate.
