Sheepskin cleaning made simple.

First, use leather conditioner to moisturize hyde

Saturate wool with water.

Apply store bought inexpensive hair shampoo and hand massage over the entire sheepskin.

Follow-up by rinsing with water. Use an inexpensive store bought hair conditioner and massage that in and rinse out. Hang and allow to drip dry.

I brush and vacuum first, then prespray using a fine fabric prespray, extract using an upholstery tool, removing all excess moisture, then dry on a rack. Then examine the Hyde and condition as needed with leather condition agents.

Top cleaning with a rinse and vacuum tool will not deep clean a soiled sheepskin. It needs a full wash. It's simple as described above. Brushing will most likely distort the natural lay of the natural yarn and make it wispy. This could be most undesirable.

We massage our products in by hand. I just feel an extraction process is better than letting it drip dry.

If it's a Chinese hide, the lay of the yarn may never stand upright again.

A split hyde, made thin, is problematic. It can crack and break or tear.

This subject was not the case.

To insure preservation of the hyde, it was conditioned before the wash and again after it was dried.

I got asked to do 2 like that from a taxidermist while I was doing his carpet

the seam/repair underneth had left a green stain on the carpet, I declined cleaning the skins

Hi Tom - what do you use if it has yellowed - sometimes not obvious till after cleaning has been done?

What caused the yellow in the first place?

A good wash and rinse, followed by working in a hair conditioner and rinse, would not cause a ph issue or yellowing.

Yellowing in natural wool has been a well known phenomonom - from memory I believe it was first documented in 1880's

Yeah i remember, one of my client with bunch of sheep skins from their master bathroom. They threw it in the washing machine. Guess what happened?
