Major issue was oil seal failure. Billowing clouds of oil smoke then became an emission issue.

Power was high in the rev range, and since the engine got smoother the faster it revved, people would forget to shift and burn them up, even though there was a warning light and buzzer. Today they'd install a rev limiter.

Back in the day I raced the crud out of a Mazda RX3 SP, pretty much keeping the rev warning on continuously. It was new, and not mine, so really fun.

I had an 86 Mazda RX-7. That car just took off when you stepped on it. No loud mufflers, the rotary just pushed you back in your seat and took off.

Really solid car, whisper quiet in the cabin. Sold it when we started having kids. The back seat was too small even for a child.
