Virtually every two lane road in our county is being repaved this year and sitting in the stalled traffic at 95 degrees cuased it to over heat....

really?
that's pretty sad
You sure the cooling system is up to par?

last year I had to babysit a contractor at a problem child homeowner's house
It was 90+ degrees
I sat in my car w/air on for hours on end

Well it did it again on the way home, this time I just turned the heater on and opened the windows and the warning went away

I carry a gallon of 50-50 on the truck, and 2 quarts of engine oil.
I’ve got them tucked into a corner, just in cases as this…

We also run a large snail fan on high directly on the engine during jobs right now…

This heat is no joke.

if a warning light came on, maybe there's a code stored a code reader will pull up
Might be as simple as a sensor fail

Did you get recent oil change where they topped off the coolant? They might have added the wrong coolant.

Must be..

why?
the lectro fan doesn't run all the time
It only cycles on when a certain temp is reached, then shuts off

I know you're hard of hearing, but with you hearing aid, you should be able to hear it cycle on and off if you can't see it

Water pump is failing.
"Most likely"

how do you figure?
It's belt driven.
If not dribbling water, the impeller is circulating coolant
I don't believe water pumps work sometimes and sometimes not

confirm the cooling fan is working or not
if it is, flush the cooling system and replace the thermostat

The coolant evaporates when the leak is slow.
Sometimes you can hear the bearings making noise.
I've been nervous with my van for a couple months. It was making too much noise. Mechanic said nothing wrong.
Finally got a code the alternator was bad. Replaced yesterday.
I feel so relieved today. Got a big job an hour away tomorrow. I've been stressing knowing something was coming.
Get into the shop. You are causing more damage to the motor letting it get that hot. You have to fix it anyway.

If he has to add juice regular, he's an idiot for not getting it fixed

eeyeahbutt, it's still circulating til it seizes or seal fails

that Butler?
I don't blame you for being concerned.
Direct drive TMs are tough on vans and a poor choice for a busy operator if/when they plan to keep for 8-10+ years

I have had water pumps fail because of the bushings or bearings have worn out. Still spins but not at the right rpm. Will be ok on the highway but will overheat under a heavier load like going up hills. They don't make the impellers like they used to.
