What caused this problem and can it be saved please.

Whitish area of pile appears to have been eaten?

Reverse shows indentation lines in rug that look like missing weft threads. Owner say's that nothing heavy has ever been placed on it.

If the fiber is gone there's not much you can do about it.

It could be insect damage or the result of a very high or very low pH spill (battery leak, oxidizer). Proximity to indentation indicates a liquid might have run down the leg of a piece of furniture or equipment that used to sit there.

Oh short one,
Back has nothing to do with the front. My best guess... Something was spilled or dropped on rug....the fringe shows signs of something coffee, tea, whatever.
Then someone tried to clean it...looks like some dye bleed or just really bad pile distortion, rug pile got wet and was never groomed properly. Then some genius tried bleach or an oxymoron on it. Thats my best Sherlock Holmes or I could be completely wrong!
