The wife had a stain on white cotton pants.
She tried bleach, it left large yellow stain.
I soaked in Sodium Bisulfite- did nothing.
Then the wife tried an old product her mom used to use- "Rit- Fabric whitener" it worked perfectly. Stains gone, pants whiter than ever, no visible fabric damage. (The active ingredient is: Alkyl sodium N-Methyltaurate.)

Shawn or whoever knows:
  • Can you explain why it worked.
  • Is it used in our industry? What products?
  • Is it safe?
  • Can we use it and if yes, how?

Thanks.

Interesting, Ofer.......I had just discovered (through an old CC'er on FB) that Barbasol shaving cream (plain) takes out dried, older paint in carpet. That's a big problem with rentals. It won't work on fresh or recently dried paint.

Well just about every grocery store has Barbasol at 99 cents a can, so you ought to be able to do lots of side-by-sides. I'm sure gonna try it.

Wish I had known this when I was cleaning and using the stuff every day. Rust Remover is some nasty stuff.

Take care,

Ofer, Rit makes a product called "Rit Whitener & Brightener", which is an optical brightener product. Alkyl sodium N-Methyltaurate is a surfactant, i think it is an amphoteric surfactant, to be precise. In and of itself, it won't have an active effect except to assist the Optical brightener formulation to absorb into the cotton and "set".

Optical Brighteners have no reasonable application in our industry. Manufacturers "toyed" with them in the 70's and early 80's, but the downsides were found to outweigh the upsides. For laundry, they can be well suited. They work by absorbing invisible ultraviolet light and changing it to white light. Existing Optical Brighteners can be yellowed by bleach, and the Rit may have aided in rinsing the damaged residue.

Ron allot of different metals make different rust stains. Considering copper and brass. Green rust. I'll try it. I love rust removers and have good luck with them. I used shaving cream allot on carpets in the 80S for spotting

Ultrachem Clean takes rust out easily.Removes it, not changes the chemistry. Go to their youtube channel.

I dunno what you said Shawn, but I'll look smarter if I agree.:shifty: Gary Heacock used to say lemon juice worked well on rust.

Hi Guys:

Check out Don Terry's spotting chart- under bleach. http://flooringinspector.com/page/15sio/Links.html

Sincerely,
Dale

The "Rit Dye’s Color Remover" mentioned is Sodium Hydrosulfite, the same active in MasterBlend's Magic Dye Remover. Sodium Hydrosulfite, or even better, Sodium Bisufite (cost ,odor) will neutralize chlorine bleach, such that the residue of the bleach won't be reactivate with subsequent moisture. Rit White-Wash is another product that contains sodium hydrosulfite; it also contains soda ash. It is just a weakened version for bulk washing to remove weak discolorations.
