13.4.7 Odor Concerns

When odors are detected, it is recommended that cleaners inform customers of a problem, and what remedies are available. Deodorization specialists should be consulted if odors persist after normal cleaning.

Odors can occur from sources other than bodily discharges (e.g., hair, dander, and body oils from dogs and cats). Elevated heat and humidity created from the cleaning process can amplify odors, so they are more evident during and after cleaning and during warm, humid conditions. The cleaner should educate the customer that odors can be perceived to be coming from the carpet can actually also be present in other absorbent items in the home such as furniture, baseboards, dry wall, window coverings, bedding as well as the HVAC system.

by making them aware before hand it's impossible to remove 100% of odor causing contaminates in 100% of situations cost effectively

.depending on the odor (like ciggy smoke) then you get into mentioning the HVAC, walls, drapes, lite fxtrs etc ...essentially everything in the home soft or hard

The ones that drive me nuts are when you can’t isolate it to a certain area or even identify what it is or smells like. I normally end up going with an ozone blast. All pets ,plants and people out and four hours of high ozone with AC/ fan running.

Once I found a dead raccoon under a crawl space. The odor would be in the closet, then the family room, next the garage. The odor was just being picked up by the air flow.

Seriously, the customer was conveniences it was a demon 👹 or evil spirit. When the holy water splash around didn’t work she called us.

Had one last week like that. Had allergies to her dogs but didn't want any chem odor (any scents) and was very limited in what I could do for her. Never would admit the dog odor (Not piss) was spread out over the whole house including on the furniture. Multiple air purifiers, but kept the windows open and it is hot and humid. She wanted me to just to run water thru my machine. Settled on a procyon/peroxide prespray. That didn't solve the whole house issue because all she wanted was a few areas done. Oh well

As far as Rugs go we don't offer deodorization as a service. We clean rugs if it still smells it is not clean. There are very very very few situations
when our cleaning does not remove odor. Remove the source. You can't wash glue.

Dealing with cat odor.

Chlorine dioxide
Milban
Shockwave

Ripped 2-1/2” from bottom of all Sheetrock. Removed all kitchen cabinets, vanities and was still stinking realized the upper cabinets in laundry stank cats jumped in there from top washer n dryer so those came out today. I absolutely hate cats.

Once we get it breathable kids and walls are all getting to coats of kilz before final paint and new cabinets. Installing preying doors so we can kilz in between also. Place was a big litter box.

Ac and Ductz are getting axed too

We can guarantee odor removal from hand-knotted and woven rugs.

We let customers know the limits of odor removal when cleaning their particular item. If they want the urine odor out of a piece of furniture or a hand-tufted rug, we let them know it isn't possible.

If they want urine odor out of the installed carpet/pad/floor/subfloor/wallboard, we let them know that there are people that specialize in that level of odor removal. It's gone beyond cleaning.

@Matt Wood the property is a full gut anyway. Bought an acre with manufactured home. We wanted to be virtually debt free so we’re rehabing and clearing other debts and looking to cash flow the new home build in the next year possibly two depending on growth and life. The nice thing is being debt free with the abilities to grow/raise food and we have our well and it’s a cool area to live in.

Re-Odorizer (Verb) The act of failing to do your job because of a lack of knowledge and or caring. The act of pouring onto an odor another odor which masks first said odor.

Carpet Cleaning was born out of excuses in a way.In the seventies truckmounts were born. You were an owner operator who wanted to do your best an had no aresenal of items.Like we have now.Due to this fact the pioneers in this industry had to be on defensive mode. Our continuing squabbles an versions on how to clean .Further fragmate us.Plumbers ,electricians go in,do there work charge the price no hesitation,no client how come questions.Mike you posted a serious question. But as a cleaner if you performed all steps correctly. From inspection to completion.Simply remind them wash your walls, ceilings ,hard furniture. The odors are everywhere.Be truthful tell them if they can't reduce spills an mishaps.Revert to hard floor. Why are we on the defensive for those who are to lazy to let there pet out.No other trade would be....Just the furniture it self is a huge malodor sponge...shrug it off there are many more opportunities availible
