He spent a good bit of time helping me track down the massive amount of scale build up that was shutting down my water flow..

Then helping me do something I have never done in 7.5 years..de scale!!! Lol

Just because you run ro water doesn't mean you never descale it just means you only have to every year or so..it took 8 years and 4600 hrs to clog me up

Thanks again for the help..I owe you one

Mark and Dave, I consider you two BOTH heavy-hitters here. Tell us how you did it, newbies and old guys can learn a thing or two.

I had the same situation happen to me a couple years ago and I run a water softener in the shop and on the truck as well as a filter system. I am finding the high heat can scale up the system faster. I had around 3800 Hours on my pump so I thought that it was the pump going bad. Had a pump overnighted and that did not work either. I do run a chemical injection system so I found scaling on my Butler on the front panel block that the extra male quick connects are, and the chemical injection goes into. I actually had to take that apart and soak in toilet bowl cleaner and still scrape the crap out. It then happened a year later to me even after diligent matainence of our water softeners. It just seems to be our water in this area and high heat from the unit. Now we descale monthly. Just 60 miles away where my brothers do business, they don't have the same problem with their Butlers.

Now in Dave Gills situation, he ended up having some scaling at that block on the front panel, but he also still found it would not move water. The pressure gauge would hold pressure but no water from high pressure line. In my case my plug was at that block, but Dave's was at the heat exchanger. He determined that by opening up the cold water flow to the unit which will push and pull water away from the heat exchanger. So this got us to finding his plug up was at the exchanger. I have found you need to mix your deascaler at 50/50 and get it into the system (start at high speed, then go to idle speed) and let it cycle from your bucket on the floor feeding the unit and cycling the descaler until you get flow from your high pressure hose. On the Butler, we just put a female connector on the end and let it cycle back into the bucket of descaler. Don't suck up the junk that comes back to the bucket and within about 2 to 5 minutes, you should get it opened up. I have found I better be prepared to clean the Wand and presprayer screens about 3 times the next day and also descale again at the end of the week again.

After years of never having to descale, I had experienced the same as Dave. Its a bummer that he also had to get a new pump and overnight it the same as I did, but now it is new and should have another 4-5000 hours in it. They never seem to break when it is convenient! Is there ever a good time for a break down?!

Just glad we were able to connect so we could brain storm and get to the bottom of this faster! That's what I love about these boards!

Worded perfect...

My downfall was relying on my ro water not scaling up ever..it took 7.5 years and 4600 hrs to clog up and I was a bit close minded about scaling..I never got a warning at all..no clogged filters or anything. Not jet clog or build up at all..

I do all my work and maint and consider myself a pretty good mechanic in general and I just overlooked something simple..

I reached out to others with experience and was rewarded with awesome detailed info and help..now I'm up and running and have a bit more knowledge in my back pocket..

My advice is to never be afraid to ask for help..no matter how experienced you are you can always benefit from outside advice..
Thanks
Dave

I talked to Mark for a good half hour on the phone when I was on the hunt for a used Butler. Even though I didn't buy a Butler this time (went with Cleanco), I appreciated his wisdom and patience toward me, who he doesn't really even know. He told me to call him back after the purchase and he would help me get it set up right...The guy is a class act!

Any pics of all scale and were it built up within the butler system so that others that might have this same problem will know exactly what to look for?

No pics..but the build up was in the heat exchanger. Nothing external on any fittings or anything.

It was pretty much all in the heat exchanger. I removed the hose that sends water from the pump to the system and it was a bit scaly inside of it but not totally blocked. The only indication of any problem was lower pressure.

Great thread, thanks all!

So, Dave, did you just reassemble and descale to get the scale out of the heat exchanger?

We have been so busy and with Dave's experience, we made time to descale our Butlers today. Gonna change all the fluids and belts on July 4th while I have some time in the morning too. Preventative maintanence is a good thing! Now tomorrow we will also be prepared to be cleaning the filters on all the tools a couple times during the day...just part of the drill...

Hey Russ,

I sure will. I might be replacing my 2008 (which was put into service July of 2009) next year. Just so you know, we change the oil in the motors every 1000 miles of drive time and always way before recommended even on the hour meter. All fluids are also changed in the Blowers and cat pumps way before recommended as well. We take the philosophy that "oil is cheap" and any soils in the system can take out early life. We also wash them daily in the winter and weekly (or if needed more) in the summer. Guys keep them pretty armoralled as well. Anything they might need, they get. We always do preventative maintenance for the units! I also sell them with the high end gps stereo systems as well and the hoses since we run the 2.5 inch hose reels. All the custom rims and accessories go with them too. I know I have a couple of others asking about the 2008 (my brother being one of them) so I will keep you in the loop though as things develop.

Have a great 4th!
