DISASTER RESTORATION & REMEDIATION SYMPOSIUM
Presenter: Dr. Gene Cole
He has been a contributor to multiple editions of the IICRC S500 Water Damage Restoration Standard and the S520 Mold Remediation Standard, and is a co-author of “Suggested Guidelines for Remediation of Damage from Sewage Backflow into Buildings.”
Dr. Cole holds both a Master of Science degree in Public Health Microbiology, and a Doctor of Public Health degree in Biohazard Science & Occupational Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Topic: The Science of Sewage
Description: In this widely and eagerly anticipated follow up to the 1994 paper, “Suggested Guidelines for Remediation of Damage from Sewage Backflow into Buildings,” Dr. Cole will explore Microbial Hazards, including emerging pathogens, antibiotic resistance/virulence, and vector-borne agents; Chemical and Radiological Hazards, including endocrine-disrupting chemicals, pharmaceuticals, genotoxicants, and radioactive elements. Additionally, he will look at Exposure Reduction, including health status, practices and equipment.
CLEANING SYMPOSIUM
Presenter: Scott Warrington
Topic: The Effectiveness of Carpet Protectors on Different Fiber Types
Description: Is carpet protector safe to use and does it work equally well on all types of carpet fiber? For example, do the needs and characteristics of wool require a different protector than nylon? Does a hydrophobic/water repelling fiber such as olefin benefit from a protector? Does protector even adhere to it? Warrington will present the results of a study developed and conducted with Bridgepoint/Aramsco chemist Tom Forsythe that looked at the effectiveness of different protector types when used on different fiber types.
FLOORING INSPECTION SYMPOSIUM
Presenter: Dr. Ralph Moon
Topic: The Use of Tile Tapping as an Investigative Tool
Description: The science and application behind the use of “tile tapping” is beneficial for the flooring inspector so as to understand the legal defensibility of the method. This presentation will describe the effectiveness of various tile tapping instruments as compared between the human perception of sound to a frequency analysis provided by a microphone. The comparison will underscore the complex frequencies emitted during tile tapping and demonstrate why the selection of the right tool aids the investigator. The presentation will differentiate the effectiveness of tapping marble, travertine, ceramic, limestone, sandstone and porcelain tiles and demonstrate which methods are best suited to identify de-bonded tiles. The presentation will also demonstrate the detection limit of the method and examine whether an audible analysis can differentiate between separations that occur between the tile and the thin set and the thin set and the concrete foundation. The presentation will end with a discussion on the impact of heat (150oF), cold (17oF) and flooding on competently bonded tiles.
