You often see misleading instructions on how to vacuum rugs. Number one to look for is a soft brush roll. Most modern vacuums are too stiff. Set the pile height so that you feel the brush roll engaging the carpet. If it's too difficult to push, you may cause damage and if it's too easy to push, the brush may be spinning too fast and pilling the surface. A broom can do damage if misused.
