Where do I start, its an excellent program so far and its a long way from over.

Lisa and Jim are great instructors and the Pemberton multi-building complex has been well suited to the intensive hands on sessions going on this week.

It has been a long day and full of rug washing and pre-inspection-hands on.

get your feet wet- do it don't watch - fun day. And I mean this first day has been a full on intensive day.

Being given a pile of rugs and told ok pre,-inspect- CAREFULLY and boy there were some subtle surprises, both during the inspection and later in the pits. I think I caught Lisa smiling to herself when the evil surprises revealed themselves. I bet she was thinking the last two months of distance learning - these folks get it!

It is a fantastic learning environment. Its set up so real world it doesn't feel like its being taught, but more like I was working the rugs and being fed advice and directed as if I was an apprentice.

All the tools,
all the rugs, wool on wool, wool on cotton, rayon, silk olefin, tea washed, chemical washed..... and more
coffee stains, piss rugs, over dyed, fugitive dye, bleeders, delams, fringes, you name it - we worked on it
extraction? how many ways do you want to do it. we did at least 4 or 5.
pit aggitation 6 ways of Sunday...
drying - lots of different fans of all types - flat drying hang drying face down drying..... on and on

I can't forget to mention and give thanks to Mike Kerner from Sapphire Scientific who when teamed with Jim Pemberton gave a really good insight into why their solutions were formulated the way they were.

Tons of questions from everyone but really great experienced practical answers back from Lisa and Jim as well as advice from the more experienced members of our group. The nice thing is the questions were all on the ground rug washing questions because the first two months of the Textile Pro program were all on line and private forum interaction dealing with the basics. So when we all got to Pembertons we were all on the same page and up to speed.

The course goes into another mode after this hands on week that works on other business aspects of rug and fine textile cleaning.

Bottom line: I've learned a hell of a lot of valuable practical advise that has given me the skills to more thoroughly clean - change that, WASH rugs, keep me out of trouble with the difficult ones and improve my company profit.

And we still haven't finished with the hands on sessions!

No, there wasn't a centrifuge there.

With out doubt the best delivered instruction I have ever had in this industry.

Lisa and Jim should take great pride in knowing they have definitely set the bar higher on rug and fine textile course content and delivery.

May the Lord be with you but I don't see any Red equipment there so this event must be a complete waste of time.

Not so much on structural challenges today other, than wash techniques typical to construction and fiber types. More of a focus on pre-inspection wash and drying methods. Dye stability, urine decontamination, odor treatments, in-pit bleed remediation. Amazing save on a big red bleed.

Some of tomorrow will be stain removal, fringe cleaning, blocking, drying, finishing alternative cleaning. I'm sure there will be a lot more than that.

We went to around 5:30 tonight. So far its really well laid out and paced. You can see the processes becoming intuitive for most everyone. This has become evident with the number of different problems we were challenged with where there have been multiple ways and tools to come up with solutions. Everyone was constantly engaged. The day went fast.

I've thought about entertaining the idea of a small in-plant shop. There really is only 1 other true competitor I would have in this area.

I would definitely take this class. Thanks for the review Bob!

I HATE YOU BOB FOSTER.

YOU MAKE ME WISH I WAS FORTY YEARS YOUNGER.

You have some great instructors there along with a reputable chemical manufacturer, seems like an arrangement made up in the clouds. !gotcha!

Congratulations to all those that made the event possible, including all the attendees.

Shorty.

I am also interested.
Surely Lisa listened to Joe Polish's fundamentals of marketing like: post the information here or PM us (interested souls.)

Good review Bob.
Looks like a great class.

Dozens of rugs with spotting challenges

We probably cleaned fringes with at least a dozen different solutions and did them a few different ways. Got to say that with the fringe testing - the nicest result was with Sapphires Upholstery Prespray and their natural fiber rinse.

Dozens of fabrics for identification and discussions on how to clean many of them.

Really good dial in on alkaline and acid spotters and cleaners for use on natural or synthetic fabrics.

Today was Jim's day to introduce us to probably 10 different bleeder fabrics, some of which you would not normally suspect. Kind of like learning the lesson the hard way by buying a couch off a customer because you bled it - only you didn't learn the lesson the expensive way.

The Sapphire Scientific Chemical guy Mike Kerner was here again today and with Jim Pemberton they "myth-busted" the difference between oxidizers and reducers.

Now I want a bunch more toys. Including that DriEaz moisture probe. The inexpensive Home Depot pond liner and ABS pipe wash pit.

You don't need a lot of expensive equipment to do a good job cleaning rugs. You just need good training. Higher end upholstery is as much about pre-inspection and fabric identification as it is in rug cleaning. Same skills, slightly different tools.

But the highlight of my day was to finally meet the legend called Mr. Lee Pemberton and shake his hand. He's a real gentleman who came down to meet us and tell us how important he felt it was to share information to make this trade better for everyone. Like father, like son.

Thanks to the Pembertons and their helpful staff for their hospitality and coffee snacks and lunches.

If there was ever two moths who have flown close to the flame who would have the reasons and capabilities to do so then it would be these two.

There's an incredible wealth of cleaning knowledge between Jim and Lisa.
Looks like a fantastic class, certainly two straight shooters when it comes to training.

I love that type of format, good hard hitting useful facts that make you money and keep you out of trouble. Testing and certification have their place but when it takes years of red tape and politics to get a new course through The Clean Trust BS, classes like this are more valuable that a patch of certifaction.

Knowledge is powerful, knowledge opens doors and allows you to make more money and also keep you out of trouble. Patches and certificates impress your clients and your peers.

I think you should have both, but until the day that The Clean Trust catches up to reality, these types of courses are going to keep you in the game.

Congrats Jim, Lisa! 8)

P.S. Bob you're so lucky to be there! Awesome pic with Lee you and Jim!

Kid is that really you? Man that's great you made it! I would think this class would have a major impact on your cleaning, especially with all the delicate stuff you see. Congrats for making it!

Jerred and I traveled to the airport together a few minutes ago. He's perfectly suited between his personality and client type to increase his customer base and income well beyond what most carpet cleaners would normally do with only two years in business. Just watch, you'll see. I think he's going to be a NY rug wash sensation. I wouldn't call him a Rug Fag cuz he'll pop you one in the face.

As far as Jim and Lisa, you bet they have something to prove and they obviously aren't just talking about it they are doing it.

This was a first off of a three month course but you'd never know it because it ran so smooth. This was not remotely like an IICRC class - no where near in the same league for content or delivery.

Bob, why didn't you drive your cab over home?

Boston is a 9 hour drive to Pittsburg. If anything even minor happened it would be a time looser and costly risk. I was very busy up to the day I left and I am busy as soon as I get back so why would I want to drive long miles in an unknown vehicle I have never even seen.

It would take 4 days of driving and cost around 2000 to do it. I'd rather pay 3700 to ship it and know I can be making money while "Suzi" is riding in comfort on the deck of a trailer.

The damn thing is still sitting in Boston... but at least the transport is arranged and the guy is about to pick it up.

I know. LOL

Less about the statement and more about the opportunity to clown on "The Clean Trust" faux pas.

Who designed that logo? If it were April I'd have thought it was a joke. Seriously! thathurts

Hopefully they didn't pay much for creativity.

Re: Review: Textile Pro Program with Lisa Wagner & Jim Pembe

Bob, thanks for the posts here. I was kind of stunned by all you shared... these guys will think Jim and I are paying you. =)

When Jim and I were going through all the apps to choose who would be our first 20 companies, we were looking more for enthusiasm and a drive to really deliver for clients more so than any prior training (though that of course never hurts). I believe we created an amazing dynamic through choosing everyone who came, they really clicked, had fun, and learned a lot not only on "doing" the work - but running a business where you are growing and making your mark in your market.

Having Lee show up at our event was a real treat. I love the photo of you three. I used to serve on the IICRC board with Lee. One of the most valuable gifts I ever had from those years was the opportunity to get to be friends with Lee, and Cliff Zlotnik, and then Jim. All guys who represent doing the right thing even when no one is looking, and no matter if everyone else is doing it wrong and getting away with it.

It's not that way any more... but it is getting better as others are reforming that group. But the slow pace made a lot of talent leave. I mean, what does it say when the son of one of the original shareholders, steps down as being an "approved" instructor? I think it says a lot.

Jim and I have talked for years about the shortcomings of training within the old model. But the idea of creating a program that could truly craft a "specialist" in the field of textiles was a seed of an idea just about a year and a half ago. So to see this plan come to life, and unfolding into this intensive workshop after several months of basics training (and 3 more months to go...) - is literally a dream come true for Jim and I, and also for Lee. He told me yesterday that it had always been his vision to see his facility have a course like the one we just did, which made me tear up. That is the best compliment I could have gotten in my life.

So thank you Bob for being part of our "creation" this week - and you too Jarred. It was great to laugh so much while working. I'm tired and heading home... but I have never been as happy as I am right now. It's the feeling of knowing you've been part of something incredible, that will only get better from here.

Happy Rug Cleaning!
Lisa

P.S. One thing on IICRC. We still direct students to certification courses. Pembertons still holds them, and I've been trying to NUDGE Shawn Basillion into getting approved for the IICRC rug course because he would be much more knowledgeable with practical help in training in that field than all the other current RCT teachers who have never really run a sizable rug operation. (Plus he's a fun teacher.) The reason we did not try to work within the IICRC structure is 2 reasons: 1) it's too slow and unwieldy - getting progress in that group is like running through quicksand, and 2) we were seeking results of understanding so you leave knowing instead of memorizing and forgetting. To teach the creative way we know everyone will grow from cannot be done through a stiff certification framework. At least I don't think it's possible.
