Have you heard that Sapphire Scientific is now offering their 870ss with a Propane fueled engine? They are again pushing innovative approaches to cleaning by listening to their customers' requests for alternative fuel choices, and providing the solution. Seems to make sense, in light of recent reports that the US has huge reserves of natural gas, and natural gas is a key component of propane. Not only is propane less affected by OPEC oil price fluctuations, but it's so clean, that it can be used indoors in many applications. When I was in high school, my summer job was driving a propane-powered forklift all day long, in a Bird's Eye frozen food processing plant.

I suppose that you're referring to the Little Giant propane heater, which is a very good product, especially for machines that don't have internal heat exchangers, or don't generate enough heat to get water up to adequate cleaning temperatures. Neither of those apply to the Sapphire 870ss, nor their other TM models - plenty of heat without the need for an external heater.

When we were using it in the eighties, the price of propane always closely followed the price of gasoline. As of today, the average price of propane is higher per gallon than gas and available at far fewer outlets, so someone choosing propane today would have to be looking for benefits other than saving fuel costs.

I hope that someday the huge reserves of natural gas are used to reduce the price of propane. If that happens and more stations carry propane again, I'd switch.

we could also use your patience in dealing with dopes like Marty who are in such a hurry to look clever that they don't read the question.

The decision to start offering an LPG option on the 870ss came about as a result of customer requests. Interestingly enough, the big brute of the bunch (870ss) has the biggest demand and even a backlog of orders, at the moment.

Having worked for machinery manufacturers in a couple of different industries, I can say that they don't offer something new or different unless the demand is such that it makes $$ and sense. I'm sure that's why Bob Kline, Sapphire Scientific's president, told me that they intend to address additional models as requests for LPG increase. He said that they do have some requests in the funnel, already, for LPG on other models.

Lee Stockwell and Jim Bethel: Thank you for your welcome. Glad to be part of this.

In regards to the comment by The Great Oz, right on! A couple of things I want to mention about when LPG makes sense, when costs - right now anyway - are comparable to gasoline.

1. In Europe, and other parts of the world where gasoline is much more expensive than in the States (my son lives in Sweden and pays over $8/gallon), LPG and CNG are very desirable alternatives to gasoline (or "petrol"). Thus many commercial vans and trucks use that. Having an LPG TM is not only less costly to operate, but also doesn't require two separate fuel tanks. Sapphire sells TMs in Europe, Australia and other places, thus there is a demand already. Likewise, in the U.S. there are cleaning firms that use alternative fuels in their vehicles, so purchasing a new TM that runs off the same fuel reservoir, makes sense.

2. Back in the 90's I visited two high-rise facilities - one in the States and one in Canada. One was 26 stories tall. They both had solution and vacuum plumbing built into the structures, with access to quick connects and vacuum ports on every floor. The TMs were located in the basement of the facilities and were powered by LPG. There are many more such facilities in the States and overseas. Often building codes specify LPG, and prohibit on-site storage of gasoline, even though both are flammable.

Like everyone else, I hope that the glut of natural gas that oil companies have more recently found ways to extract, with minimal environmental impact, will eventually make LPG the low-cost fuel of choice for vehicles and TMs. In the meantime, there are quite a few applications that prefer or require LPG, and Sapphire Scientific is dedicated to serving that need.

If the 870ss...is going to employ propane HEAT...

Why in the world would the end user want to pay for a 63hp engine.. KMA!

Isn't the 63hp engine... basically there for the HX requirements...
Lots of OVERKILL to turn a GD pump & 410 blower.."don't cha think"

Since the HX system would be removed on the fuel fired unit...
WHY NOT PUT A REAL BLOWER ON IT.."for a TRUE dual-wand unit." :?:

ps. The SPEC's on the 870ss are identical to the EVEREST HP..."except the footprint &
the Ford engine"...

IMO.. the compaction of those components in to a LARGE unit...is USELESS... -sniff
We have enough trouble keeping these units cool ..AS IT IS.. LIKE!

Have some better information about propane pricing today. The average price is higher than the average price for gas, but I've found that the price varies much more at the retail level than do gas prices. A local station is selling propane for $4.50 per gallon, one is selling for $5.00 pg, and another is selling for $2.99 pg.

The price they pay depends on their volume of sales and the price they charge depends on what they think they can get in their location. The $2.99 price is at a large commercial rental yard in an industrial area. They don't fill barbecue tanks.

Keep it up Harper and I'll sic Fred on you again.

Until you've used a 6008 to dual wand with, your opinion is about as worthless as you are with a Viagra dispenser.

I've been paying .99 a gallon for propane since the 1st of May. So I guess Les was right, propane and CNG are the Future.

It's actually a triple threat!

Although we use it more dual wand than triple but it can do it. Plus at the end of each of those three you'd never know that it was more than 1-wand setup running. It's a bad boy! hey now
