Hey guys,

A client found my company by googling carpet repairs, she lives 2 hours away but wants a price. She refuses to trust any carpet retailer as she has had bad experiences. Thats why she did her research via the web and found me 8)

Anyway, they are updating the central heating system complete and the new grilles are smaller than the existing ones.

She would like a price to complete the job. I assume we'd be going in after the other work is completed, lift off the new grille, trim in some pad to fill the gaps, and then basically do a full repair, trim the inside to the new shape, and re fit the grille.

15 units. She has lots of mats (pictured) that can be used for the repair work.

Anyone care to shape up a break down of costs with time frames so I can allocate my own costings to it?

I'd also be keen to see what you'd charge for the job. Keep the travel seperate.

Travel is 150kilometers each way, pretty much all on state highway roads.

Cheers, John

Steven, don't worry about Shorty, we yank each others chains a bit. He lives a hot climate, I used to live up near there but shifted to New Zealand which is a colder climate.

It is my understanding that I only need be concerned with the pad and carpet.

Hopefully Harry or Marc, maybe Steve or Tony will have some suggestions overnight for me.

I'm wondering how many you could do in an hour, hour after hour till they're done.

2? 3? 4? either way, adding 4 hrs travel, it's a full day which ever way you look at it.

What's a reasonable 'full day rate'?

Given that you have longish cuts across the width of the run, how hard would you try to keep to a gap?

Or would you be tempted to use a roofing square or straight edge and just slice straight through?

I also don't know the extent of the offcuts, so it'd probably be a case of using strips rather than full pieces for each one and wasting the centres.

John I normally charge those ones by the hour that way you can take your time and not loose if anything goes wrong, I would include free travel I would charge that at about $140 per hour + materials. Use a roofing square or straight edge and just slice straight through?

John,

There are too many unknowns to give a price, IMO. The nice thing about a day rate, it can easily work in your favor but at the very least, it will protect you from losing anything. One thing is for sure, the last one you do will not take near as long as the first one, so you will gain time as you go along. You likely will complete it in one day but I would suggest to them you may need a second day, just to cover yourself. Sometimes these little things can turn into a big thing and eat up a lot of time. I think Craig has the right idea. Just my thoughts.

I agree with Steve as well as giving a price over the phone. I would tell her the travel charge and rate automatically. Than when you arrive guestimate a time. I cant see the vents being that much bigger. Im guessing 2 inches bigger. But no matter if it takes 2 hour for you to do it your day will still be wasted alot of drive time.
