We have a policy set up to take care of that very thing. According to a set of public act in Michigan you can dispose of items left for processing after 180 days. We have that statement posted in all our rug drop off locations.
When an order is complete, we will call the customer to let them know it is complete and ready for pick up. This call, as well as all calls we make, is logged with the order notes.
Once a month after that we make a call to remind them to pick up their order.
At 11 months, we send the customer a certified letter indicating we will be disposing of their order within 10 day. After we have waited 20 days, the Rug Care Manager himself makes a final call to the customer and lets them know we will be disposing of the rug in 48 hours.
If we have not heard back from the customer we will "dispose" of the rug(s). Most "disposed" rugs are sold in lobby of our Rug Care area of our cleaning plant.
You would be surprised at how easily most of those rugs sell. When customers are dropping off rugs for cleaning they can check out the used rugs, which in some cases are better then the rugs they are dropping off. In those cases, some will even take their own rugs back to throw away and buy the used piece. We even have some customers come in periodically just to check out to see if we have any current disposed rugs for sale.
