A string grid is pinned to the kilim's surface to map out where the pins will go. The dimensions of the grid are determined by the overall size and/or fragility of the kilim.
Once inserted, the pins will distribute the weight of the kilim and its linen backing across the surface of the mount. These insect pins are most commonly used to pin butterflies or other insects.
Textile conservation intern Erica Storm carefully places a pin at each corner vertex and then again in the middle of each square.
Some areas of the kilim are more fragile than others and require more pins.
The top third of the kilim will require more pins than the bottom portion, because the top-most area bears the majority of the weight.
