It works as well or better than any other method of buying customers. That said, organic search results yield much better results. Most people will not click ad-words if they see what they are looking for in the organic results. Without a price point, you will see very few ad-word clicks.

It has worked reasonably well in the past, but we are "coupon" carpet cleaners. Biggest drawback for me was competitors clicking on ads and draining the account faster than I put money in. Google needs to figure out how to stop that nonsense before I would invest money in it again.
