Ads showing on your own business website?

I'm reviewing options to redo my cleaning site.

Looking at heaps of options etc. I'm seeing a few sites where they have an ad manager displaying ads on their site.

Is this good for SEO? If not, why would you do it or does it pay well depending on your PR?

Will this not present a platform for your own competition to nab a prospective buyer right out from under your nose?

Thanks. I am reluctant to do it, the few sites I have seen it on had their competitions ads showing right there on their index page!
